Chester J. Wulff, former business teacher and golf coach at Newport
Harbor High School, passed away Monday in Coos Bay, Ore. He was 81.
Born to Fred and Lillian Wulff on Sept. 4, 1919, in Villa Park, Ill., Mr.
Wulff attended Wheaton College on a football scholarship. After attending
the U.S. Naval Academy, he became a lieutenant and fought in the Pacific
during World War II.
On May 1, 1948, Mr. Wulff married Josephine Hatten. They were blessed
with two daughters.
Mr. Wulff received his teaching credential at San Jose State University.
He taught business and started the work experience program at Newport
Harbor High. He also coached “B” football and the golf team there for
many years.
Retiring in 1986, Mr. Wulff later moved to Myrtle Point, Ore., to be
close to his family and to enjoy watching his grandson participate in
sports. He was an avid golfer and spent many hours on the local courses
with his golf buddies. He was a member of the Coquille Valley Elks and
the Baptist Church. But his greatest joy came from being with his family.
Mr. Wulff’s Christian spirit and sense of humor will not be forgotten by
those who had the good fortune to know him.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Josephine; daughter Kathleen of
Coos Bay, Ore.; daughter and son-in-law Terri and Frank Akers of Myrtle
Point, Ore.; grandson Forrest Akers, of Myrtle Point, Ore.; brothers
Gifford Wulff of Illinois and Raymond Wulff of Costa Mesa; and many
nieces, nephews and friends.
