Girls basketball: Sailors finish strong

NEWPORT BEACH - Senior Nicole Ashton scored 17 points and grabbed
15 rebounds in Thursday’s 50-33 loss for Newport Harbor High’s girls
basketball team, ending the Sailors’ season.
Newport (4-22, 0-8 in league) led after the first quarter before Aliso
Niguel (14-11, 2-5) took control.
Evita Castillo joined in on the rebounding feast, grabbing 10 boards to
go along with her three points.
Athena Vasquez and Lisa Gerlach contributed to the offense, each chipping
in with five points.
Nikia Hastie, who torched the Sailors with 26 points in their previous
matchup, scored 19 for the Wolverines, while freshman Julia Pederson
chipped in with 11.
Newport lost its previous matchup with Aliso, 55-22, on Jan. 20.
