IRVINE - It was one point better better than the 66-11 loss to
Woodbridge High last month, but Newport Harbor High’s girls basketball
team still lost big by host Woodbridge on Thursday, 68-14, in a Sea View
League game.
The Sailors (4-20, 0-7 in league) didn’t make a field goal until 1:08 in
the third quarter, when Evita Castillo hit a jumper. Newport’s first four
points came off free throws from Castillo and Nicole Ashton.
Woodbridge (15-9, 5-1) started the game atrociously, shooting 9-for-36 in
the first half to take a 23-3 halftime lead. But the Warriors started the
second half by hitting their first eight shots, and the rout was on.
“Woodbridge is a good team,” Newport Harbor Coach Gregg Savage said.
“They’re too big and too strong for us to do anything against them.”
Castillo led the Sailors with six points and eight rebounds. Ashton, who
had three points, and Briana Brooks had the only other Newport field
goals.
Natalie Quinn and Lara Gray led Woodbridge with 19 and 18 points,
respectively. Newport has games against Costa Mesa and Estancia left,
before its league finale against Aliso Niguel.
