NEWPORT-MESA -- The Newport-Mesa Unified school board laid the groundwork
Tuesday night for an oversight committee that would ensure that the funds
raised to repair the district’s schools are spent properly.
Although no official decisions have been made, instructions were given to
district staff to draw up a model based on criteria determined by board
members.
The committee will be multitiered, with a district-based citizens review
panel consisting of 25 members and project review committees of five,
seven or nine members at each school site.
After extensive discussion, board members came up with a possible
shopping list of the types of citizens they would like to see appointed.
Board members agreed to initiate the appointment process now, as opposed
to waiting until after a bond election.
The model, including all the specifics, will be compiled by district
staff and presented again at the Feb. 22 study session for further
discussion.
No action will be taken by the board before the special board meeting on
Feb. 29.
