ALISO VIEJO - Aliso Niguel High’s Nikia Hastie scored 26 points to
lead her team to a 55-22 win over visiting Newport Harbor’s girls
basketball team in a Sea View League game on Thursday. The loss drops
Newport to 3-16, 0-4 in league.
Newport came into the game determined to stop the Wolverines’ star
freshman Julia Pederson, who averages a little over 20 points per game.
Matched up against Newport’s Lauren Gallardo, she scored 14.
“Gallardo did a great job on defense,” Newport Harbor Coach Gregg Savage
said. “We wanted somebody else to beat us. Unfortunately, their whole
team stepped up.”
Hastie took advantage of a defense keyed on Pederson and scored 14 in the
first half. Hastie and Pederson combined for all of Aliso Niguel’s (11-8,
1-2) 23 points in that half.
Molly Weedn scored the first four points as the Sailors led, 4-3, five
minutes in the game. Weedn ended up with six points.
Lisa Gerlach led the Sailors with eight points and nine rebounds.
Gallardo got four points, with two steals on defense. Nicole Ashton also
scored four to round out Newport’s scoring.
