Roehr, Hyder golden in net

With goalkeepers Alexia Roehr and Kelly Hyder combined to shut out

four tournament opponents in as many games, the Huntington Beach AYSO

Region 56’s Under-12 girls Gold All-Star team last weekend captured the

Costa Mesa Classic Championship.

An Alex Dunn goal in the opening period proved to be the game-winner

in the tournament final, where the Pier Pressure blanked Laguna Niguel of

Region 41. The play of Hyder, Carley Bonchonsky, and Mary Horstmann -

whose 10-minute defensive stand in the fourth quarter repeatedly turned

back several Laguna Niguel attacks on goal, helped preserve the

precarious one-goal lead.

Huntington Beach, held to a scoreless tie with South Irvine (Region

144) in its tournament opener, came back to blank Aliso Viejo (Region

889), 5-0, before edging Tustin (Region 96), 1-0, in a semifinal match.

In addition to Dunn, Lauren Brancky, Brooke Bashore, and Candace

Mecklenburg all contributed to the Pier Pressure’s offensive attack.
