Girls basketball: Blast from the past

COSTA MESA - Six days ago, Costa Mesa High’s girls basketball team
beat Villa Park, 54-42, but that was another millennium. This time, the
Spartans made sure history didn’t repeat as they won easily, 58-37,
Tuesday night in nonleague play.
“They hustled and got every loose ball,” Costa Mesa Coach Jim Weeks said,
“and we missed our shots. It’s hard to win when you score nine points in
the second half.”
The Mustangs (10-5) shot 1 for 26 in that stretch, with Jenny Earnest
getting the team’s lone field goal. Villa Park (8-8) also got Costa Mesa
center Autumn Smith into foul trouble.
Smith drew her third foul early in the second quarter against Spartan
center Lauren Yabon and saw limited action afterwards. She ended up with
four points in the game. Costa Mesa, who was leading 17-7 after one, saw
its lead whittled away to 28-27 at halftime.
“Autumn got into foul trouble and that changed the complexion of the
game,” Weeks said.
Her backup Maria Lazos ended up with eight points, which led the
Mustangs. Earnest led all starters with seven points. Nine different
Mustangs scored.
