Marina High senior Dustin Kaatz was named Saturday as the Most
Valuable Player of Foothill High’s Bob Osborne Tournament after leading
the unbeaten Vikings (6-0) to the championship.
The 6-foot-5 forward averaged 20 points and 10.5 points per game during
the tournament and nearly matched that average in the tournament final,
where Kaatz scored 19 points to go along with 11 rebounds in a 60-48
title-clinching victory over Mission Viejo.
‘Dustin had an outstanding tournament and our team played really well,’
said Marina Coach Roger Holmes, whose Vikings meet Paloma Valley today in
the Murrieta Valley Tournament.
In the Troy/Kennedy Tournament final, the Huntington Beach girls
basketball team reached the title game, where the Oilers fell to host
Troy, 69-34. Amy Sanders, a 5-10 sophomore guard, averaged 21.5 points
and 11.5 rebounds per game and represented the Oilers (3-1) on the
all-tournament team.
Sanders’ biggest outing came during Huntington’s semifinal victory over
Corona del Mar, in which she scored 31 of her team’s 46 points and pulled
down 14 rebounds in a 46-38 victory.
Huntington will take on El Toro Friday (7:30 p.m.) in the opening round
of the San Clemente Tournament.
