Martians comeback beats Sparks

The Fountain Valley Martians rallied in the final quarter to score
a 45-37 victory over the Newport Mesa Sparks in a girls Division I
National Junior Basketball contest.
Ashley Courtney scored a game-high 21 points and also had four assists,
with nine of her points coming on a 9 for 9 shooting performance from the
foul line in the final quarter. Other key contributors for the Martians
included Kimberly Rhoten with eight rebounds and five steals, Jacqueline
Smith with eight points and seven rebounds, and Tiffany Prugichaillers
with six assists and four rebounds.

Brea 41, NHB Rebels 36 The North Huntington Beach Rebels opened up a four-point halftime lead on
the strength of the scoring of both Ciara Sheppard and Lindsey Schulze,
and the defensive pressure of Jessica Kwan, Dana Van Voorhis, and Erin
Esky. Brea, however, reeled off 12 unanswered points in the third quarter
to take the lead for good. Sheppard scored 14 points, Esky finished with
10, and Kwan came up with seven steals for the Rebels, who fell to 1-1.

The Sparks overcame a three-point halftime deficit as Erica Fruhwirth
scored her game-high six points in the second half to lead the comeback
victory.
