Huntington surfers wrap up league title early

There are still two games meets left on the 1999 Sunset League surf

schedule but already, the Huntington Beach Oilers have laid claim to the

championship.

The Oilers clinched no worse than a tie for the Sunset title Thursday by

routing Edison, 85-56, at the Huntington Beach Pier.

Huntington dominated the meet with their chief surfing rival, with senior

captain Micah Bryne leading the way as the Oilers improved to 8-0 on the

season.

The win also gives Huntington a two-game lead on the rest of the Sunset

League pack.

‘This was a solid win...as solid as we’ve had this season,’ Huntington

Coach Andy Verdone said. ‘We did really well in all areas. This was a

really good team victory.’

Team points are accumulated after competition has taken place in boys,

girls, bodyboarding, and longboarding competitions.

The Oiler boys are comprised of Byrne, Chris Fowler, Adam Craven, Mark

Garman, Shaun Ward, Eric Coffee, Justin Brescia, Jon Gorak, Michael

Nitti, Ryan Rosche, Brad Ettinger, and Brandon Long.

The Oilers competing in the girls competition include Angie Rivera,

Heather Corcoran, and Cheryl Downey. The three longboarders are Steve

Baldi, Barrett Huntsman, and Nick Kabiri, and John Giffin, Jon Dalley,

and Ryan Ward competed in the longboard competition.

Huntington will compete against Fountain Valley today (6 a.m.) at

Magnolia St., then complete the regular season Tuesday by hosting Long

Beach Wilson at Goldenwest St.
