Arizona State University has signed Mike Simpson of Huntington
Beach to a national letter of intent to wrestle for the Sun Devils
beginning next fall, Arizona St. Coach Lee Roy Smith announced Thursday.
Simpson, the 1999 California State champion at 119 pounds and a 1999
Cadet World Team member, currently is a senior at Brethren Christian
High. The Huntington Beach native is listed among InterMat Wrestling’s
Top 100 prospects and currently is rated eighth nationally in the Amateur
Wrestling News national high school senior rankings.
Smith projects that Simpson will wrestle at 125 pounds for the Sun
Devils.
“Adding Mike to our talent pool addresses our current need in his weight
class for next year,” Smith said. “We’re very excited about the
back-to-back recruiting classes we’ve had here at Arizona State. Those
classes put our future chances to challenge for national honors in good
hands.”
Simpson is one of two recent recruits this week to sign with the Sun
Devils, joining 189-poun Quinton Swanberg of Horizon High in Scottsdale,
Ariz.
