SOUTH COAST PLAZA -- Lawyers for Beach Access owner Tom Moore and
talk show host Dr. Laura Schlessinger, who accused Moore of carrying a
pornographic magazine in his store, have agreed to meet in an attempt to
work out some resolution to their dispute.
“Life is not very good for [the Beach Access owners],” said Moore’s
lawyer Andrew Guilford. “People want to know if they’re giving Hustler
magazine to kids.”
The dispute arose in late July when Schlessinger walked into the South
Coast Plaza store with her son and saw a copy of Big Brother, a
skateboarding magazine published by Larry Flynt.
Last year, Flynt had run photos of Schlessinger naked in his Hustler
magazine.
After seeing Big Brother, Schlessinger urged her listeners not to
patronize the store. Moore, who was not at the store when Schlessinger
was there, said the magazine was on display where it was by accident, but
he denied that it was in any way pornographic.
In the ensuing media battle -- in which other radio talk show hosts
Howard Stern and Tom Leykis of Southern California station KLSX got
involved on behalf of Beach Access -- Moore demanded an on-air
retraction.
Schlessinger has yet to do that. Her lawyer could not be reached for
comment.
Guilford warned that if Schlessinger refuses to retract “the lies she
said about our clients,” he will seek further legal action.
A date for the meeting has not yet been arranged.
Guilford added that his clients are anxious to resolve the issue as
quickly as possible because business has dropped significantly for the
store during the typically busy back-to-school season.
