Police found a homemade explosive device among an arsenal of weapons
Tuesday night behind a Costa Mesa strip mall. One suspect, 19-year-old
Anouvong Kounlavong of Huntington Beach, was charged with possession of a
destructive device. He is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail. Six teenage
boys who were with Kounlavong were cited for breaking their respective
city’s curfew laws.
Police said the group had staked out a video arcade on the 2200 block
of Fairview Road the night before their arrest. Authorities received two
complaints around 11 p.m. about the group, which had congregated behind
the arcade.
When police arrived, they discovered a small, glass vitamin bottle
wrapped in black tape that had a fuse attached to it. Inside the
container was gunpowder.
Police also confiscated several weapons, including a bat, pool cue and
metal bars.
Costa Mesa police Sgt. Don Holford said authorities are unsure who the
group was targeting or why they came to the arcade.-- Greg Risling
