One of the first postmasters of Corona del Mar, Grant Howald was also the
longest-serving.
Howald served in World War II before moving to Corona del Mar permanently
in 1948.
As if all his dedicated service in the post office was not enough, Howald
volunteered much of his free time developing centers for youth and senior
citizens. Howald founded the OASIS senior center with his wife, Inez.
OCC named Howald Outstanding Citizen of the Year in 1979, and he was Corona del Mar’s Man of the Year in the 1970s. Corona del Mar’s Community
Youth Center was named after him (it’s now Grant Howald Park).
Grant and Inez Howald had been married for 61 years when he died in 1996
at the age of 85.
MILLENNIUM MOMENT celebrates the people who have made major contributions
to theNewport-Mesa community this century.
