Huntington Beach lifeguard hopefuls raced headlong into the surf south of the pier Saturday morning, trying to prove they have the right stuff to earn a spot on the city squad.
Ocean swimming and running on the sand were among the drills in the yearly lifeguard tryouts.
Water temperatures were in the upper 50s, according to the city website.
Those who performed best in Saturday’s physical tests were invited to return for interviews Sunday. The city is looking to hire about 20 lifeguards.
