Bicyclist pronounced brain-dead after being injured in H.B. collision

A bicyclist who was injured in a collision in Huntington Beach last week was pronounced brain-dead Sunday, according to authorities.
Police said the cyclist — a 57-year-old Anaheim man the Orange County coroner’s office identified as Mario Gomez — and a 2003 Ford Expedition collided at about 6:30 a.m. Friday in the area of Gothard Street and Heil Avenue. The cyclist was not wearing a helmet and was traveling on the wrong side of the road when the crash occurred, authorities said.
Gomez suffered major trauma and was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he “received the second pronouncement of brain death” at about 1:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the Huntington Beach Police Department.
The Expedition sustained damage to its front end. The driver, a 34-year-old Huntington Beach man, was not injured and remained at the scene, police said.
