Readers React: Poverty is poverty, for Latinos and everyone else

To the editor: Comments about working-class Latinos and Mexican immigrants could be applied to that socioeconomic sector of the population, regardless of culture or race. Poverty is poverty. People wash their cars on a driveway because it’s cheaper, assuming they have a driveway. (“Latinos’ rising fortunes are epitomized in Downey,” Aug. 5)
Regardless, I thought the article was positive. I have family in Downey, and they’ve done well.
Interestingly, they visit Mexico every year, speak Spanish and embrace their culture. I guess “assimilated” means they have enough money to go to the carwash and have big parties at a venue rather than the backyard.
