Readers React: Dollar-driven development obscures L.A.’s history

To the editor: Patt Morrison facetiously suggests that the official city seal of Los Angeles be switched from a “stylized castle” to a “wrecking ball.” How apt. (“Developer Wayne Ratkovich on revitalizing L.A.’s historic buildings,” op-ed, March 10)
In addition to the long gone Richfield Building, the wrecking ball has attacked the iconic hat-shaped Brown Derby restaurant as well as the venerable Shubert Theatre, to mention just three of the culturally valuable venues that are now barely even memories.
As we decry the “war crimes” of Islamic State’s destruction of ancient art pieces, shouldn’t we also point the finger at dollar-hungry developers who have erased the landmarks of L.A.?
