Letters: Good food is always a winner

Re “Jewish delis in a pickle,” Business, Feb. 22

As a person who has had a very close tie to the Jewish-style delis in Southern California for 50 years, I question the validity of this article.

I think the delis that are operated by knowledgeable, hardworking people seem to thrive through good times and bad.

Delis are small businesses that tend to fail when they have poor management. Most often, they are passed down to sons or daughters, some of whom fail miserably and others of whom thrive.

While food costs and rents rise, the delis that succeed refuse to lower their quality, service and portion sizes. Yes, they raise the prices as the need arises.

The good delis in Southern California have no rivals; they are a breed of their own and will succeed for many years to come.
