Letters: A heartwarming story

Re “Letters stopped, their bond survived,” Column One, April 30

Thank you for the moving article about Laurie Tragen-Boykoff and Nicky Mutoka, the 8-year-old Zambian boy she sponsored. Her $21 a month helped put Nicky through school and helped the struggling family with food and medical needs.

But it was the loving relationship that developed between them that kept on going, even when they could no longer communicate, that was the heart of this wonderful story. Laurie is a true mensch — a good person — and so is Nicky, who used the funds to make a better life for himself and his family. That Laurie and her husband cared enough to bring Nicky and his wife to California for a personal visit says everything about that beautiful relationship.

It’s heartwarming to read such a positive story amid all the misery and suffering that usually constitutes the news.
