Cardinal Roger Mahony is back? Haven’t we had enough?

Mahony had his final swan song in Rome by participating in the March papal conclave at the Vatican. His resumption of presiding over confirmations only reflects his inability to let go of his red galero and fade away.

Mahony’s rank shouldn’t silence parishioners and priests who’d rather say, “Thanks, but no thanks.” Perhaps the salient words of Mark Twain are apropos: “When in doubt, tell the truth.”

How can this be?

Former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno might have known about a single child abuser on his staff and was fired, his illustrious career ruined forever. Mahony admitted knowing of repeated abuses on his watch, and he’s back?

This is why my family will never tithe to the Roman Catholic Church again. We are not giving up on our religion, but we will not help to support criminal enablers like Mahony.

Reading about Mahony’s higher profile, I’m reminded of the Dan Hicks song from the 1970s: “How Can I Miss You When You Won’t Go Away?”
