L.A. Unified to offer limited summer programs

Budget cuts have plagued summer programs at area school districts for years, but the Los Angeles Unified School District announced Thursday that it will offer limited classes for credit recovery this year.
Summer school will be limited to 10th-, 11th- and 12th-grade students who have failed a course required for graduation. Ninth-grade students, who have failed an entire year of Algebra 1, may also enroll.
Summer school will be provided at 16 high schools throughout the district from July 8, 2013, to Aug. 2, 2013, for students now enrolled in L.A. Unified schools, said Javier Sandoval, an intervention administrator for Beyond the Bell.
Beyond the Bell administers before- and after- school programs on L.A. Unified campuses and will operate summer enrichment programs at more than 160 elementary and middle schools during the 2013 summer vacation period beginning June 10, 2013.
