Huntington Beach police and U.S. Secret Service agents arrested a former bank teller on suspicion of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from elderly customers.
Jake Chih Wei Cheng, 23, of Tustin was taken into custody Friday and is in federal custody in Santa Ana, according to Huntington Beach police. He is suspected of stealing a total of about $240,000 from two customers.
Authorities allege that Cheng defrauded a man out of about $200,000 by forging checks over about a year while he was a teller at the Wells Fargo bank branch at 7902 Edinger Ave. in Huntington Beach.
Cheng later transferred to a Wells Fargo branch in San Clemente, where authorities suspect he stole more than $40,000 from another customer.
The bank’s fraud investigators discovered the thefts and Cheng was fired, police said.
