Reporting from San Diego — San Diego police on Sunday were investigating the death of a man who was being detained on suspicion of drunk driving.
The man, described only as in this 50s, was found sitting in his car in the Bay Park neighborhood, according to Lt. Paul Rorrison.
Officers smelled alcohol on the man’s breath and saw open containers in the car, Rorrison said. Police also saw other symptoms of intoxication due to alcohol or drugs.
As the man was being questioned, he began to vomit and had trouble breathing, Rorrison said.
There was no struggle, nor did the officers use force to detain the man.
Officers provided first aid, Rorrison said, and the man was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner has scheduled an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
