Riverside brush fire burns more than 100 acres

A brush fire that scorched more than 100 acres of a Riverside park Thursday is 15% contained, a city fire department spokesman said.
The blaze, which erupted about 12:47 p.m. in a hard-to-reach area of Sycamore Canyon Wilderness Park, quickly burned through dry brush and grass, said Division Chief Mitch Wesche. About 180 firefighters from multiple agencies attacked the flames, with the help of two helicopters and four fixed-wing aircraft.
Within hours, firefighters had slowed the 130-acre blaze’s march toward commercial buildings and homes, Wesche said, and the fixed-wing aircraft were no longer needed.
The fire’s cause was under investigation.
