A man armed with a pickax was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Pacoima early Wednesday, authorities said.
Shortly after 1 a.m., Los Angeles police officers responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 10900 block of Telfair Avenue, according to LAPD Officer Norma Eisenman.
When officers arrived, they were directed to a man who was on top of a carport and “was irate,” Eisenman said. The suspect came down and began throwing objects at the officers, who responded with various non-lethal means, she said.
The man then armed himself with a pickax and ran to a nearby residence, where he attempted to gain entry, Eisenman said.
At a point after that, the shooting occurred, Eisenman said. The man, in his mid- to late 20s, was struck and taken to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries, she said.
Another person involved in the incident was transported to a hospital with a stab wound and was listed in stable but serious condition. Two officers were injured — one was treated and released and the other was still being treated early Wednesday, according to Eisenman.
