Man killed by Long Beach officers was a gang member, police say

A man shot and killed by police in Long Beach after firing a handgun on a busy street was a reputed gang member with a lengthy arrest history, authorities said Monday.

Officers shot the man Sunday evening on West Anaheim Street near Chestnut Avenue and recovered a handgun from the scene, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Police said officers responded after receiving a report of a man firing a gun at a gas station in the 500 block of Anaheim Street.

Detectives believe the shooting was possibly gang-related and that multiple rounds were fired by the suspect who was killed by officers, police said Monday.

“Detectives have identified the suspect as a local Long Beach gang member with an extensive arrest record,” police said in a statement.

The suspect’s name was not released. The incident was being investigated by the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office, which probes all officer-involved shootings.

Since January 2007, at least 273 people have been slain in officer-involved shootings in Los Angeles County, according to The Times Homicide Report database.
