Woman arrested in alleged hit-and-run that left a pedestrian dead

A Los Angeles woman was apprehended Sunday in connection with an alleged hit-and-run hours earlier that left a pedestrian dead in South Los Angeles, police said.
Vernice Taylor, 56, was arrested about 5 a.m. on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, said Sgt. Gregory Hoyte of the LAPD’s Central Traffic Bureau.
The incident occurred about 12:30 a.m. on Gage Avenue at or near Broadway, Hoyte said. A man in his 60s was lying on the street when he was struck by a silver Nissan, Hoyte said. Investigators believe he was alive when he was hit.
Police said they do not know why the victim, who was not identified, was lying in the street.
Police searched for Taylor’s car after talking to witnesses and viewing evidence at the scene, Hoyte said. “They found the vehicle nearby,” he said.
Taylor was being in lieu of $100,000 bail.
