Two workers in San Francisco died Friday after they were crushed by granite slabs, fire officials said.
Emergency personnel responded at about 10:16 a.m. to 1525 Cortland Ave., where two people had been working inside a container of granite slabs, according to Mindy Talmadge, a spokeswoman for the San Francisco Fire Department.
Slabs had fallen on the workers, and although they were extricated after about 14 minutes, one worker died at the scene, Talmadge said. The other worker was transported to the trauma center of San Francisco General Hospital, where he later was pronounced dead, she said.
The identities of the workers were not immediately released.
Officials with the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health are conducting an investigation into the incident, Talmadge said.
