LAFD firefighters in cookoff rematch at weekend food festival

Yeah, yeah, yeah, lots of celebrity chefs are going to be slicing and dicing at The Taste, the L.A. Times’ food and wine festival this weekend at Paramount Studios.

But do any of them have an edge over the best chefs in the Los Angeles Fire Department?

Maybe, but it’s close. And if you don’t believe me, come join me Sunday at 2:15 when I host a rematch of the firehouse cook-off, with Capt. Mark Curry of Station 29 in Koreatown throwing his best at firefighter Cruz Macias of Station 87 in Granada Hills.

That’s right, just like last year, these two guys beat all the competition to make it into the finals, with Curry hoping to edge out Macias for the second year in a row.

Joining me as judges will be colleagues Jonathan Gold and Russ Parsons, as well as Evan Kleiman, host of KCRW’s “Good Food” and former chef and owner of Angeli Cafe.

Last year, Curry whipped up some shrimp and veal dumplings over pad thai noodles, and Macias made mole enchiladas, with famed French Laundry chef Thomas Keller stepping in as sous chef to help Macias beat the clock.

They eat well in the LAFD. Especially at 29 and 87.
