A man who got in a shootout with Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies in Long Beach before shooting himself is in grave condition at a local hospital, officials said.
The incident began Tuesday about 10 a.m., when deputies were searching for a woman who had broken the terms of her work release conditions.
Deputies learned the woman was walking her daughter to school and during their search, approached a man walking with a little girl to ask if he had seen the woman, officials said in a news release.
Authorities say the deputies were in a marked Sheriff’s Department vehicle and when they approached the man, he pulled out a gun and shot at them.
The deputies returned fire and wounded him, authorities said. The girl was not hit in the exchange.
The wounded man collapsed in a driveway and shot himself, officials said. He was rushed to a local hospital where he remains. The girl was returned to her mother, who was not the woman deputies had been looking for.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
