A Mendocino County sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot Wednesday and authorities were pursuing at least one suspect who fled the scene, a Northern California TV station reported.
Mendocino County Sheriff Tom Allman told the Ukiah Daily Journal that a deputy had been shot around noon Wednesday in the Cleone area, just north of Fort Bragg.
Allman said no further details would be available until a 5 p.m. news conference, but a source told KTVU the deputy had died from his injuries.
The Ukiah Daily Journal reported that U.S. Highway 1 near MacKerricher State Park was closed about 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, and investigators urged travelers to stay away as they sought at least one armed suspect.
