Big rigs crash on Interstate 5 near Newhall; 1 dead

A crash involving two big rigs on northbound Interstate 5 north of Newhall on Tuesday killed a man in his 40s, authorities said.
The crash occurred about 6:50 a.m. in the northwest part of Los Angeles County just south of State Route 138, California Highway Patrol officials said.
Officer John Lutz, a spokesman with the CHP’s Newhall area office said workers were busy cleaning a “hazardous material spill” on the roadway.
CHP Officer Monica Posada said two lanes of the northbound 5 Freeway were closed indefinitely and a SigAlert was issued. At least one lane remained open to traffic.
Los Angeles County Coroner Chief Craig Harvey said an unidentified male in his 40s was killed. He said coroner’s investigators were either wrapping up at the scene or had cleared it as of about 9:30 a.m.
