Man briefly evades capture after allegedly shooting at deputies

A man could be charged with attempted murder of a peace officer, authorities said, after he allegedly fired shots at two L.A. County deputies during a traffic stop on the 60 Freeway in Industry.

At about 10:25 p.m. on Wednesday, the deputies were trying to conduct a traffic stop when 20-year-old Jesus Navarro failed to yield, L.A. County sheriff’s Sgt. Jeffrey Kim said.

“At that point, the deputies saw a flash of light and then heard gunshots and realized they were being shot at,” Kim said. The shooting briefly shut down the westbound lanes.

The deputies, who were not injured, attempted to catch Navarro but lost sight of him. About 20 minutes later, he was picked up on the 605 Freeway, near the 91 Freeway, by California Highway Patrol officers.

Kim said officials found a ski mask, a pair of gloves and live ammunition inside the suspect’s Toyota Tacoma pickup truck. They also found live ammunition and scattered gun parts at the scene of the shooting.

Navarro was taken into custody at the Industry station, where he was booked on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer and being a convicted felon in possession of live ammunition and a firearm, Kim said.
