TCA: Mike Judge finds new ‘Office Space’ in ‘Silicon Valley’

Mike Judge, the creator of the animated “Beavis and Butt-head” and “King of the Hill,” is also known for taking a sharply satirical look at workplace politics in his 1999 hit comedy, “Office Space.”
He returns to that white-collar canvas in a totally different setting in his new HBO comedy, “Silicon Valley,” which is scheduled to premiere April 6.
The show “takes a comic look at the modern-day epicenter of the high-tech gold rush, where the people most qualified to succeed are the least capable of handling success,” according to production notes.
Judge has some perspective on the setting: He worked as an engineer in Silicon Valley during the tech boom. But he added that he and fellow executive producer Alec Berg, who is also in the cast, did extensive research into the world of men who make billions of dollars in advancing technology.
Both Judge and Berg characterized “Silicon Valley” as both a love letter and a poison-pen letter to those innovators.
“It’s funny how, for a lot of these people, it’s not enough for them to make billions,” Judge said. “But they also have to say that they’re saving the world.”
Berg said some of those real-life personalities “take themselves too seriously, so they have to come in for a little kicking.”
