Electric Zoo fest offers refunds after cancellation over drug deaths

Organizers of New York’s Electric Zoo dance music festival announced Tuesday that they will offer partial refunds after canceling Sunday’s final day of performances in light of two drug-related deaths.
The deaths included one 20-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man. Representatives for the city of New York (which owns the Randall’s Island facility where the festival is held) said that use of MDMA is suspected in each death.
At least four other festival patrons are currently in the hospital with symptoms apparently related to the drug.

An official statement from the city of New York said, “Due to serious health risks, the Electric Zoo music festival on Randall’s Island on Sunday, September 1st, has been canceled. The City recommended cancellation and the event promoters have agreed.
During the first two days of the Electric Zoo music festival, two concert-goers have died and at least four others became critically ill and have been placed in intensive care at area hospitals. Definitive causes of death have not yet been determined, however, both appear to have involved the drug MDMA (ecstasy, or molly). The Electric Zoo organizers have worked with City officials to reduce health risks at this event, but in view of these occurrences, the safest course is to cancel the remaining day of the event,” the statement continued.
Made Event, which produces Electric Zoo, said ticket buyers with three-day weekend passes will receive a one-third refund, and 50% back to those with a Friday and Sunday ticket package.
