Box office: ‘Ride Along’ cruises past ‘I, Frankenstein’

The action-horror entry “I, Frankenstein” struggled to life on its opening day, allowing “Ride Along” to coast to the top of the rankings.

“Ride Along,” a comedy starring Ice Cube and Kevin Hart, started its second week by earning an estimated $6.3 million Friday, taking its cumulative total to more than $60 million. The film is expected to hold on to the top spot after claiming the biggest January opening ever last weekend.

Further off that pace, “I, Frankenstein” is currently tracking for third place on the box-office chart with just $2.8 million in estimated earnings Friday. The film, which takes place in an alternate reality in which Dr. Frankenstein’s monster walks the Earth 200 years after its creation, was expected to earn between $12 million and $14 million in its opening weekend, according to those who have seen pre-release audience surveys.

In second place, the military drama “Lone Survivor” earned an estimated $3.6 million. The Afghanistan war movie has already surpassed the $80 million mark in earnings, and could take in an additional $13 million once the weekend is over.

Elsewhere, the lone family-friendly entry, “The Nut Job,” earned an estimated $2.5 million Friday, placing it just behind “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” which is on track for fourth place on the chart with an estimated $2.6 million.
