‘Jurassic Park 3D’ opens at No. 1 in China

“Jurassic Park 3D” had a strong opening day in China on Tuesday, earning $6.3 million on 2,500 screens to debut at No. 1.

That gives the Universal movie, a 3-D conversion of Steven Spielberg’s 20-year-old science-fiction adventure, the fourth highest opening day of the year in China, behind the new films “Iron Man 3” ($19.1 million), “Pacific Rim” ($8.6 million) and “Fast & Furious 6” ($8.3 million) and ahead of titles such as “Man of Steel” ($6.2 million) and “The Hobbit” ($5.6 million).

3-D conversions of older films have proved to be good business in China, where many people weren’t able to see the movies in theaters during their initial run -- last year “Titanic 3D” opened at $11.2 million and went on to gross $150.2 million there.

The total international box office for “Jurassic Park 3D” stands at $20.7 million. The movie is set to open this weekend in Mexico, Panama, Spain and Britain.

When it was released domestically in April, “Jurassic Park 3D” grossed $45.4 million, placing it among the more successful 3-D conversion releases in the U.S.
