Cinefamily salutes Philip Kaufman with master class

Less than two years ago, the director Philip Kaufman ripped into Hollywood for neglecting the “mature adult audience,” and suggested that a number of his movies — his literate, sensual, unfailingly intelligent movies — would have little chance of being made today. Presumably there will be more reflections on a moribund industry, and on Kaufman’s own estimable cinematic accomplishments, when the director sits down for a master class at Cinefamily at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, co-presented by the Writers Guild Foundation.

The session will be followed by a screening of “The Right Stuff,” Kaufman’s splendid, still-thrilling 1983 adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s novel. It’s not the only one of the director’s films showing at Cinefamily (Silent Movie Theater, 611 N. Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles, [323] 655-2510 www.cinefamily.org/) this weekend; “The Wanderers” (1979) screens Friday at 7:30 p.m., followed by “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1978) at 11 p.m.
