Hollywood Headlines; a crazy week in review

Ringo Starr celebrated his 70th birthday in style on Wednesday with hundreds of friends at the Hard Rock in NYC. It’s probably the first time in a decade that the Hard Rock has seen that many people all at once. Ringo asked for peace signs at the event -- at least we think he did. He could have been asking for the British-styled two finger salute to the new U.K. government -- and all the assembled Americans just got it backward. Either way, he had a great time. The Purple One issued another of his wiggly statements, this one declaring that the Internet, like MTV, was “over.” Perhaps he’s only ever been to MySpace, in which case we could understand. (OK, that’s it for the MySpace jokes.) The reason Prince was talking was that he was releasing a new album -- niftily named “20TEN” -- and was eschewing modern means of distributing it. The “scheduled to appear” list was like a Hollywood movie premiere: Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, Megan Fox, Lindsay Lohan ... but it wasn’t. It was a court case where these celebs had been subpoenaed to appear to testify against five reputed members of the “bling ring,” (one of whom was allegedly Alexis Christine Neiers, pictured above) who authorities said allegedly broke into the stars’ Hollywood Hills homes and made off with millions of dollars in art, cash, clothes and jewelry. Her World Cup experience was unlike most others; Paris Hilton (hididng under a jacket in the above pic) was detained in South Africa on suspicion of pot possession. It all went down at the Brazil-Netherlands game where part of a group she was hanging with were -- gah! -- smoking the wacky tobacco. Paris was snatched up by crack South African authorities who then released her when they realized they’d misidentified her. Presumably the real culprit escaped detection and is now on the loose in South Africa, smoking marijuana willy-nilly, and putting all of their society in harm’s way. It’s not going to be pretty. Cristiano Ronaldo scored big time this week -- as the new father of a baby boy. But in a twist worthy of a loud blast on a vuvuzela, the mother’s identity will remain confidential and the boy will be under Ronaldo’s exclusive guardianship. In fact, talking of vuvuzelas, let’s hope Ronaldo has the good sense to ban them from his house. The news, as with most everything else these days, was announced on Twitter. As life often imitates art, it was only right that “The Office” star Jenna Fischer tied the knot this weekend with Lee Kirk. They’ve been dating since January ’08. This is Jenna’s second marriage; her first was to writer James Gunn, but it’s Kirk’s first so we’re sure she can teach him a lot. The wedding was filled with celebrity friends including costar Rainn Wilson, who was tweeting his excitement. And if that wasn’t enough water-cooler conversation fodder, Fischer’s on-screen hubbie, John Krasinski, will be also marrying his sweetheart this weekend.
