Actors and directors talk about favorite performances
Your “Crazy Heart” character had an affair with Bad Blake, then met another man, is that the end of it?
“Jeff and I joked that there was going to be a sequel called ‘Crazy Liver,’ where they end up together. I think that it’s impossible that they end up together and have it be a happy ending in any way. You want them to get back together. I was even thinking when I watched the movie, ‘Can they make out a little at the end?’ But no. Everything will be . . . if they do. If they love each other, they have to stay away.” (Ricardo DeAratanha / Los Angeles Times)
In “The Messenger,” your casualty notification officer wrestles with sobriety and the emotional stress of his job. What do you think happens to him after the film ends?
“I think he goes on doing the same thing and probably gets sober and then drunk and then sober. The cycle keeps repeating, trying to keep it together and do his job. On the other hand, maybe he gives up the job and finally leaves his family, which is the Army, and heads off to Alaska. Maybe the last chapter of one’s life is to soothe the soul.” (Jay L. Clendenin / Los Angeles Times)
