Houston 8, at San Francisco 7: Lance Berkman splashed his major league-leading 15th home run into McCovey Cove, breaking a ninth-inning tie. The Astros rallied from a 6-0 deficit to take three of four from the Giants, their first series win at San Francisco since a three-game sweep in September 2001.

Pittsburgh 11, at St. Louis 5: Pinch-hitter Jason Bay’s three-run homer off Jason Isringhausen (1-5) broke an eighth-inning tie and capped the Pirates’ rally from a four-run deficit. Nate McLouth added his 11th homer for Pittsburgh, which outscored the sagging Cardinals, 10-0, the last five innings to take two of three in the series.

at Philadelphia 5, Atlanta 0: Cole Hamels (5-3) pitched his first career shutout, Ryan Howard homered and the Phillies moved within a game of the National League East-leading Florida Marlins.

Washington 1, at New York 0: Willie Harris’ diving catch in the ninth saved the Nationals, who won behind Jason Bergmann’s fantastic pitching performance. Bergmann (1-1) pitched seven sharp innings, giving up three hits and striking out nine, one shy of his career high. He didn’t allow a runner past second.

at Chicago 4, San Diego 0: Ryan Dempster struck out a career-high 12 and hit a go-ahead single against Greg Maddux (3-4) during a four-run fifth inning. Jim Edmonds singled in his debut with the Cubs, who won three of four from the team with the worst record in the major leagues (15-27).

at Arizona 8, Colorado 5: Backed by Stephen Drew’s career-high four hits, Brandon Webb became the major leagues’ first nine-game winner.

Florida at Cincinnati, ppd., rain: No makeup date was set for the finale of the scheduled four-game series. The Reds had won the first three games.

Dodgers 7, at Milwaukee 2: Andruw Jones, Jeff Kent and Gary Bennett homered during a six-run seventh inning.
