Pepperdine holds off Portland in overtime

Tyrone Shelley scored 21 points, including the go-ahead points in overtime, to give Pepperdine a 50-48 win over Portland in the first round of the West Coast Conference tournament Friday night at Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego.
Pepperdine (11-20) squandered an 11-point lead in the final 6 1/2 minutes of the second half before rebounding behind Shelley in overtime. The freshman tied the score at 48 with a short jumper at the 1:36 mark of overtime before giving the Waves a 50-48 lead with a pair of free throws with 37.5 seconds left.
Portland (9-22), which led only once in the game, missed a chance to tie when Taishi Ito missed a jumper in the lane with two seconds left.
Sherrard Watson scored 17 points to lead the Pilots, who missed six of seven shots in overtime. Nik Raivio’s jumper with 3:17 left in overtime were Portland’s only points of the extra period and gave the Pilots their only lead of the game at 48-46.
The sixth-seeded Waves will face third-seeded San Diego in a quarterfinal-round game tonight at 8:30.
San Francisco 79, Loyola Marymount 60 -- Dior Lowhorn scored 26 points and Manny Quezada had 24 to lead the fifth-seeded Dons (10-20) over the Lions (5-26) in a first-round game.
Orlando Johnson led eighth-seeded Loyola Marymount with 19 points as he broke the Lions’ 35-year old single-season freshman scoring record. Johnson also had five rebounds.
