Health officials in Martinique have declared a dengue epidemic after more than 1,000 suspected cases were reported since August.
About 1,300 people have been treated for symptoms and 40 of them have been hospitalized, the health department said. No deaths have been reported, according to local media on the French-ruled Caribbean island.
Heavy rains are blamed for the outbreak of the mosquito-borne illness, which causes high fever, headaches and nausea.
