Driving is still a privilege

Re “30-day auto impounds reconsidered,” Nov. 1
I couldn’t help but shake my head and wonder just how brain-dead our municipal officials are in wanting to reconsider the 30-day auto impounds for unlicensed drivers.
I feel for the illegal immigrants who, without a license, lose their cars, which occurs because they have been stopped for a traffic violation and not because of some sweep or sting operation. But last I knew, it was legal to drive in California with a driver’s license from another country, which raises a question: Do these people not have one of those either?
Driving is not a right, it is a privilege. It costs money to comply with the law to drive a car. If money’s tight, perhaps other means of transportation should be examined.
