49ers reportedly set to leave San Francisco

The San Francisco 49ers ended negotiations with the city about building a new stadium and plan to move to either Santa Clara or somewhere else in California, the Associated Press learned Wednesday night.

Owner John York notified Mayor Gavin Newsom of the team’s decision earlier Wednesday, a city official close to the negotiations told the AP on condition of anonymity because no announcement had been made.

Team spokesman Aaron Salkin declined to comment Wednesday night.

The sides had been talking over the last few months about building a privately financed stadium at Candlestick Point that was going to be part of the city’s bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Oakland defensive lineman Tyler Brayton was fined $25,000 and Seattle tight end Jerramy Stevens was fined $15,000 for an altercation at the end of Monday night’s game.

Brayton was ejected in the final minutes of the Raiders’ loss to the Seahawks for kneeing Stevens in the groin at the end of a play. He apologized, saying, “It doesn’t matter what the situation was, I had no right to do that.”

Gene Washington, the NFL’s director of football operations, ruled that Stevens tried to kick Brayton in the groin area earlier on the same play, leading to his fine. Washington also ruled that Stevens head-butted and taunted Oakland safety Stuart Schweigert on a play in the second quarter. Stevens was called for a personal foul for both of his infractions but not ejected from the game.

The New York Giants’ all-time leading receiver, Amani Toomer, will sit out the rest of the season after choosing to have surgery for a partial tear of a left knee ligament.

Toomer felt pain in his knee Sunday and came to the sideline briefly in a victory over Houston. He later returned and finished the game.

Buffalo running back Willis McGahee will be sidelined indefinitely because of three broken ribs, leaving the Bills without their best offensive threat against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

McGahee was originally diagnosed with one broken rib after being injured in Sunday’s victory over Green Bay.

New England Patriots safety Rodney Harrison, who returned from a left knee injury that limited him to three games last season, will sit out Sunday’s game against the New York Jets, Coach Bill Belichick said, without specifying the nature of the injury or a possible timetable.

The Boston Globe said it was a broken right shoulder blade that won’t require surgery.

He was injured in Sunday’s loss to Indianapolis.

Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Jordan Carstens will not play Monday at Tampa Bay after being hospitalized because of a blood clot in his left lung.

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Byron Leftwich contradicted nearly everything Coach Jack Del Rio said Monday in explaining that David Garrard will remain the starter because of Leftwich’s injured left ankle.

“I’m between 90 and 95%,” he said. “I don’t know in my whole life if I will ever be 100% again.... To be at 90 to 95%, that’s great in this league.”
