NATO to Double Troop Strength in Restive South

NATO will double the number of troops in southern Afghanistan when it takes over security from U.S. forces there next month, the force’s commander said.
The move is in response to the worst rebel violence since the fall of the Taliban in 2001, said British Lt. Gen. David Richards, who added that the NATO force would be more “people friendly” amid rising resentment over aggressive U.S. tactics. At least 28 people were killed in the region over the weekend, including four in a failed attempt to kill the Kandahar provincial governor.
