Loren Roberts moved a step closer to a Hawaiian sweep, shooting his second consecutive six-under-par 66 Saturday to take a four-stroke lead over Scott Simpson in the Turtle Bay Championship at Kahuku.
Roberts, 50, coming off a record-setting victory in the MasterCard Championship on the Big Island, had a tournament-record 12-under 132 total on Turtle Bay’s Arnold Palmer Course.
Simpson shot a 67, and R.W. Eaks matched the course record with a 65 to join Isao Aoki (66), Bruce Summerhays (70) and Don Pooley (69) at seven under.
For the first time since 1999, Hale Irwin won’t be hoisting the turtle-shaped trophy. Irwin, seeking his sixth straight and seventh overall Turtle Bay title, shot a 77 for a two-day total of six-over 150.
Roberts, an eight-time winner on the PGA Tour who joined the 50-and-over tour last July and won the Tradition in August for his first major victory, is trying to become the first player to win his first two starts of a season since Larry Nelson in 2001.
He had seven birdies to give him 40 in his first five Champions Tour rounds of the year.
