Fighting Kills 25; Candidate Assassinated

Clashes between Maoist rebels and government forces in a southern village left 25 people dead.
The gun battle began when rebels attacked a security patrol near Phapar Badi village, 100 miles south of Katmandu, the capital. Seventeen rebels, five soldiers, two civilians and a policeman were killed.
In Janakpur, suspected rebels shot to death a local candidate in next month’s municipal elections, officials said.
And in the capital, police used truncheons to disperse anti-government protesters, arresting 32.
