Opposition Leaders Under House Arrest

Nepal’s government put opposition leaders under house arrest, detained 78 activists, cut off mobile phone service and declared a daytime curfew for today in the capital to thwart plans for a major anti-government rally to demand that the king restore democracy.
Troops surrounded the homes of at least five politicians from the alliance of seven parties trying to organize the protest, and about 15,000 soldiers and police patrolled the streets of the capital, Katmandu, and its suburb Lalitpur.
Activists vowed to press on with rally plans.
